The above image has the Seal of the University of St. Andrews on a Tag and in a Tin Case and is in good condition. This document is a Diploma (ad Eudem) written in Latin of the University to William McFarlane Doctor of Medicine to practice medicine.
Dr. William McFarlane was the 17th Chief and 20th Lord of Arrochar who unfortunately lived beyond his income and incurred large debts due to expensive living and gambling. Eventually he was forced to sell the Arrochar estates which were in the possession of Macfarlanes for 600 years to strangers in 1784 to settle his debts.

The above image has the Burgh of Rutherglen Arms Emblazoned in Colour. This document is a Burgess Ticket of the Burgh of Rutherglen of William McFarlane Chyrurgeon (Surgeon) in Edinburgh.
In Scotland at this time it was first necessary to join a guild of craftsmen or merchants and then gain a burgess ticket as a freeman of the burgh. Burgesses were merchants and craftsmen of the burgh who owned property, contributed to the running of the town and its taxation and were allowed to trade plus had the right to elect the Town Council.
