Hill Muniment 74

Muniment Hill 74 was created in Latin and is a transumpt (transcript) by Johannis (John) Spreull, Canon of the Metropolitan Church of Glasgow and Commissioner under the jurisdiction of the same church of a grant of sasine which is a land transfer legal document.  This transcript was created April 1st, 1542, from an original sasine created June 8th, 1502.  The original Charter or sasine was apparently from Matthew the 2nd Earl of Lennox in favour of Johannis (John) Makfarlane, the 11th Baron of Arrochar, and the 8th Chief of Clan MacFarlane the son and heir of Andree (Andrew) Mcfarlane, the 10th Baron of Arrochar, and the 7th Chief of Clan MacFarlane.  The transcript has been transcribed/translated and is now available for CMW members to read on the website under Muniments.

The original grant of sasine or charter from 1502 was initially created by Robertum (Robert) Watson, a notary public and is for the lands of Arrochar MacGilchrist with their appurtenances (accessories and improvements).  The property is described as lying in the lordship of Lennox and the sheriffdom of Dunbarton.  It is interesting to note that both John the 8th Chief of Clan MacFarlane and Matthew the 2nd Earl of Lennox are believed to have died at the Battle of Flodden in 1513 along with an estimated 10,000 Scottish including King James IV.  There are however others including clan historian James Macfarlane who stated in 1948 that John did not die at Flodden.
