Hill Muniment 75

Muniment Hill 75 was created in Latin on December 23rd, 1542, and is a transumpt (transcript) by Johannis (John) Hamilton, priest of the diocese of Glasgow and notary by holy apostolic authority.  It is reaffirming a transumpt (transcript) dated at Dumbarton on March 12, 1514, by Johannis (John) Spreulle, canon of the Metropolitan Church of Glasgow and commissary of Master Alexander Dunbar dean of Moray and canon of Moray.  This was to Johannis (John) Makfarlane, the 11th Baron of Arrochar, and the 8th Chief of Clan MacFarlane the son and heir of Andree (Andrew) Mcfarlane, the 10th Baron of Arrochar, and the 7th Chief of Clan MacFarlane and includes information from 1514 that was reaffirmed on the 23rd of December 1542.  It has been transcribed/translated and is now available for CMW members to read on the website under Muniments.

The transcript was created at the request of Duncani (Duncan) Makfarlane.  Most likely this is Duncan Mcfarlane the 13th Baron of Arrochar and the 10th Chief of Clan MacFarlane.  This transcript basically renounces all title of right to the lands of Tullichchewan and Murlaggan back to John Macfarlane (not sure which generation or which John) giving him secure infeftment to one half of the lands for 40 pounds to be paid annually in the church of Luss and the other half for an annual rent of four merks.  In this muniment there seems to be some confusion or lack of details as to the relationship between Dougal (Duncan) McCoull (MacCowle) and Duncan Macfarlane.  It also appears that Dougal or Duncan had rights to this land granted to him by Andree (Andrew) Macfarlane probably not the father (Andrew the 10th Baron) but the son (Andrew the 12th Baron) of John Macfarlane the 11th Baron of Arrochar.  It can get very confusing when the same first names without middle names are used over and over for many generations.

Be sure to login at the website first, then select "Clan MacFarlane" from the menu and then select "Muniments". The actual .pdf file will be available for you to open at the bottom of the page. Cheers!
