Muniment Hill 19 created in 1634 and transcribed/translated is now available for CMW members to read on the website under Muniments..
Hill wrote that it was created in 1638 indicating the contents were “Letters of Charge” against John MacFarlane who was the 15th Baron of Arrochar and 12th Chief of Clan MacFarlane and his son Walter MacFarlane then Fiar of Arrochar and later the 16th Baron of Arrochar and 13th Chief of Clan MacFarlane for non-repayment of a loan. In fact, the document or letter describes the sequence of transactions and events plus proof of payment by MacFarlane’s and is a quitclaim fourteen years after the loan. Therefore, Hill’s handwritten description in his Table of Contents and Document Introduction in his Volume One do not appear to be accurate with the date and description of the contents and documents both wrong.
Janet Neilson relict (widow) of the late George Cook a merchant burgess of Glasgow initiated this document in 1634 with information regarding John and Walter MacFarlane as principals and with them the late Patrick Bell the elder merchant burgess of Glasgow as cautioner (guarantor). The MacFarlane’s had signed a bond (IOU) on November 17th, 1620, for three hundred merks principal with a penalty in case of failure to pay on time of forty pounds money.
Part of the document was written in Scots and part in Latin.
