Muniment Hill 15 created in 1750 and transcribed/translated was published in Loch Sloy in June of 2023 and is now also available for CMW members to read on the website under Muniments.
This was created for Dr. Walter MacFarlane, the 16th Chief of Clan MacFarlane, 19th of Arrochar and 2nd of Ardess. Walter the son of John succeeded his grandfather Andrew and was chief from 1705 until his death in 1767. Walter is celebrated as a most ingenious antiquary and by far the best genealogist of his time. The University of Glasgow conferred an honourary degree of Doctor of Laws on him in 1757 for his great knowledge of antiquities. This muniment and others were part of his valuable collection.
Walter declared his arms at the Court of the Lord Lyon on March 2, 1750 while changing the destination of "heirs male" to "his heirs" thereby allowing female heirs. Walter was buried in Greyfriar's cemetery in Edinburgh. For those that are unaware this is the same cemetery at Greyfriar's Kirk where over a century later the statue of Greyfriar's Bobby and a fountain were erected nearby. Now people who pass by rub Bobby's nose for good luck. Bobby's sculpture was created by William Brodie according to a HIstoric UK web page. What is interesting to note is that this muniment on line 2 has written "Or May Concern Alexander Brodie of Brodie Esquire" who was perhaps a relative of William Brodie the sculptor.
This muniment is regarding a patent with emblazon of the armorial bearings of Walter MacFarlane of that Ilk. In other words it includes a heraldic description of his coat of arms using technical terms and includes some of the history of the arms of Clan MacFarlane.

Muniment Hill 13 created in 1727 and transcribed/translated is now available for CMW members to read on the website under Muniments.
The above image has the Seal of the University of St. Andrews on a Tag and in a Tin Case and is in good condition. This document is a Diploma (ad Eudem) written in Latin of the University to William McFarlane Doctor of Medicine to practice medicine.
Dr. William McFarlane was the 17th Chief and 20th Lord of Arrochar who unfortunately lived beyond his income and incurred large debts due to expensive living and gambling. Eventually he was forced to sell the Arrochar estates which were in the possession of Macfarlanes for 600 years to strangers in 1784 to settle his debts.
