Muniment Hill 9 created in 1699 and transcribed/translated is now available for CMW members to read on the website under Muniments.
This document is called a "retour" or return or extract of a decision sent to the Chancery by a jury of inquest declaring a successor heir to his ancestor. This was from Andrew McFarlane the 18th Baron of Arrochar and 15th chief to his father Walter McFarlane the 16th Baron of Arrochar and 13th chief. It was dated December 19, 1699. Andrew matriculated Arms at the Court of the Lord Lyon as MacFarlane of Ardess in 1672 thereby differencing the Arms and crest from those of his elder brother John who was the chief at that time. Andrew declared using the demi-savage holding aloft a sword instead of the sheaf of arrows as in the original. Andrew became chief because his brother John the 17th Baron of Arrochar and 14th chief had no male children. This was the first time the succession of chiefs was other than from father to son in over 450 years.
Hill 10 is also dated December 19, 1699 so it would appear that Andrew is getting legal paperwork in order with Hill 9 and Hill 10 for the line of succession from Walter, Andrew's father and his brother John to himself and perhaps in turn his own heirs.
