This document is a declaration of discharge regarding the children of Humphrey MacFarlane to his mother Agnes Maxwell and his father Andrew MacFarlane. Humphrey MacFarlane, 1st of Brachearn was a younger son of Andrew MacFarlane the 14th Baron of Arrochar and 11th Chief and full brother of John MacFarlane the 15th Baron of Arrochar and 12th Chief of Clan MacFarlane. Apparently, this is regarding the inheritance of Humphrey and his heirs and is an annual levy of six bolls of good and sufficient oat flour from the lands of Bordland of Buchanan.

It is a contract between Andrew MacFarlane the 14th Baron of Arrochar and 11th Chief and his son John MacFarlane the 15th Baron of Arrochar and 12th Chief of Clan MacFarlane. John’s first marriage to Susanna Buchanan is failing and this contract is designed to aid in their expected separation and divorce. This muniment was previously published in Loch Sloy in March 2021.
Andrew, who became chief at the age of three was a zealous promoter of the Reformation and sided with the Regent Moray against Queen Mary at the Battle of Langside in 1568. Andrew and the MacFarlane Clan were crucial in the defeat of the Queen’s forces. Moray awarded Andrew a new crest with the demi-savage bearing arrows for his Arms and motto “This I’ll Defend” for his service in the Battle of Langside.
John was fiery and hot-tempered in his youth. John was accused of killing Sir Humphrey Colquhoun of Luss in 1592 although Sir Humphrey’s brother John was eventually tried and beheaded for killing Sir Humphrey under cover of the MacFarlane raid on Bannachra Castle. You should read Hill Muniment #5 for additional information on these feuds, the raid, and several versions of the whole scenario. Chief John’s divorce of his first wife Susanna Buchanan in 1588 started a feud with Clan Buchanan which escalated almost to a war.
