Muniment Hill 1 was created/published in 1798. It was part of "The Baronage of Scotland" by Sir Robert Douglas of Glenbervie, Baronet. It has been transcribed/translated and is now available for CMW members to read on the website under Muniments.
This muniment includes Pages 93 to 97 of "The Baronage of Scotland" with some additional notes from Hill. Information on "Macfarlane of that Ilk" included within this publication begins with Alwyn or Alwin during the reign of king David I. and king Malcolm IV. of Scotland. David I. was born about 1080 and died in 1153 while Malcolm IV. was born 1141-2, succeeded to the crown of Scotland in 1153 and died in 1165. Alwyn or Alwin was the first earl of Lenox. Macfarlane lineage descends in a direct male line from the old earls of Lenox. This lineage is documented until the time of the publication and at that time William Macfarlane of that Ilk Esq, 21st of Arrochar was the Chief of Clan MacFarlane.
There are a number of facts listed in these pages and I would like to point out one item of interest. Much of the genealogical information that was gathered for this book and others printed around that time or since has been sourced from that gathered by Walter Macfarlane, 20th of Arrochar, Chief of Clan MacFarlane. Walter was considered one of the great antiquaries of his age and he allowed liberal access to his valuable collections, cartularies and transcripts some of which are included in the 110 Muniments that Clan MacFarlane Worldwide is currently working on transcribing and translating.
